5th-8th April 2013 Sabumnim Michael Nguyen’s 5th Dan Grading – Perth

On Friday 5th April Sabumnim Michael Nguyen along with Miss Larita Bouphasavanh and Mr Tim Hon flew from Melbourne to Perth for a Training Seminar (Saturday) and Senior Dan grading (Sunday) conducted by Master Barbour (7th Dan).

Sabumnim Tony Nguyen (IV Dan) and Boosabumnim Daniel Nguyen (II Dan) departed Brisbane to meet us there to assist with the grading, videography and photography.

Day 1 consisted of a 6 hour training seminar with Master Barbour with very few breaks. All aspects of taekwondo were covered including patterns, step sparring, prearranged sparring, sparring drills and self defence. The seminar also covered the philosophy of taekwondo, training secrets, theory of power and tenets of taekwondo in more depth. It was a very enjoyable seminar.

The examination cover all aspects of taekwondo ranging from fundamental movements, patterns (Chon Ji to Moon Moo), sparring (3-step, 2-step, 1-step, prearranged, model and free), 4 on 1 random self defence, power breaking, theory (Chon Ji to Moon Moo) and fitness was assessed and scrutinized thoroughly. It was a tough but fair grading and above all a satisfying grading. Despite the few setbacks from injuries sustained on the day, I successfully completed my grading requirements and was promoted to 5th Dan by Master Barbour.

The trip allowed our team to visit local tourist attractions such as the Caversham Wilflife Park, Cottesloe Beach, Fremantle, South Perth Foreshore, Perth CBD and Kings Park. It was amazing!!!!

Congratulations to everyone that graded. A special mention goes out to Mr Paul Evensen and Mr Roger Bartholomeusz who were also promoted to 5th Dan black belt.

15th-18th February 2013 International Instructors Course/International Umpires Course – Auckland

Sabumnim Michael Nguyen and Sabumnim Tony Nguyen travelled to Auckland, New Zealand for the 79th International Instructors Course (IIC). There were over 145 students taught by the ITF Technical Committee consisting of 3 Grand Masters (9th Dan Black Belts) – GM Marano, GM Bos and GM Lan.

This event included many insightful stories from the Grand Masters, as they taught theory with practicality and the importance of history and heart.

Throughout the two day event, groups were separated by rank to allow content to be specifically tailored to each level. This provided an opportunity to go into much greater depth in terms of the analysis of movements and technique.

21st-22nd October 2012 Australian Championships – Gold Coast

Impact Taekwon-Do Australia took seven students to Gold Coast to compete in the Australian Championships. There were over 100 competitors from all across Australia. New electronic scoring technology was trialed and made the competition a lot more efficient and fair for all competitors.

Despite the excruciatingly humid weather, the team dominated their divisions to take out 4 Gold, 7 Silver and 3 Bronze. Sabumnim Michael Nguyen also tied with another competitor on the medal tally for Overall Male Champion this year creating a major dilemma. But Sabumnim decided to give the Championship trophy to his younger opponent.

All athletes competed in the true spirit of taekwondo and should be very satisfied with their progress. Well done.

Thank you to everyone who participated. Also thank you for Miss Su Lin Lim for being our guest photographer on the day.
