17th & 18th August 2019 – Master McPhail Seminar – Sydney

Sabumnim Michael Nguyen attended the Master McPhail Seminar on the 17th & 18th August at the ITF Fitness Center in Sydney. There were close to 50 black belts in attendance. Day 1 combined fundamental movements as well as Patterns Chon-Ji up to Yoo-Sin lead by Master McPhail. He is full of knowledge and it was amazing to train with such a dynamic and passionate Master in the Oceania region. He is one of the members on the ITF technical committee.  Our Senior Dans were very fortunately to be able to get some personal tuition from him on Day 2 covering all 4th Dan Patterns.

Over the two day seminar, GM Daher the seminar participates on their toes through a variety of intensive sparring drills and unique methods. He offered insight into how your opponent thinks and how to read your opponent’s movements. He also offered advice to participants who are serious about developing their sparring abilities for international competition.

Towards the end of Day 2 we participated in an umpiring session conducted by Mr McIntyre which is an important element of competitive ITF Taekwon-Do on an international level. Mr McIntyre covered current tournament rules from an umpire point of view for patterns, pre-arranged and free sparring. It was a great chance to ask questions and understand how to impress the umpires/judges and get the edge on your opponent.

It was a very enjoyable event. We are very much looking forward to the IIC in New Zealand next year.

On the 18th of November Sabumnim Michael Nguyen and Boosabumnim Larita Bouphasavanh accompanied junior athlete Leon Sejranovic to the 2016 National Championships held in Sydney. Leon has been training hard in hope to secure his place in the Junior National Team heading to Ireland in 2017. This event would determine whether he would be selected. There were 209 competitors from Australia, UK, Philippines, New Zealand & Georgia.

Leon performed his best beating Sydney rival as well as many other New Zealand competitors by kicking 2.5m in flying front kick winning Gold.

Leon competed well in Patterns only to be edged out in the semifinals finishing with a Bronze.

He was unlucky against a well-rounded kick boxer losing on warnings in the preliminaries. Both competitors showing a lot of skills and class in their fight.

The competition was spread over two days and was very well run. Thank you to Il Shim Taekwon-Do for hosting the Championships. It was wonderful to see everyone working together in unity.

Although competitor numbers were lower than usual we had a majority of Black belts being a selection tournament for ITF Taekwon-do Australia  and also being a preparatory tournament for Untited ITF Australia members competing next month in their World Championships in England. The quality of the competition was high amongst the seniors and the day ran very smoothly. .

We would like to thank all United ITF Australia instructors and members who supported the event also all Allied Members and independent organisations who were there. We wish our members travelling to New Zealand for the Oceania Championships luck and all United ITF Australia members luck in England. We know you will make Australia proud. Thank you to Mr John Abdallah for organising the event and a special thank you to all the officials and volunteers on the day who without them none of this would be possible.
